Supporting the NFP sector: How do we help you?
We are committed to promoting and supporting directors and boards in the not-for-profit (NFP) sector by providing:
Events and briefings
Our suite of NFP events are designed to help members make connections and gather insights. Our range of speakers and topics cover the spectrum of issues for directors working in the NFP sector. Events tailored to specifically meet the needs of NFP directors have included:
- Update on the reform agenda
- Financial governance
- Managing NFPs in a downturn
- Raising the profile of your organisation through strategic marketing
- Accounting and reporting
- Developing a strategy
- Succession planning
- Risk management
Briefings and events are held in both metropolitan and regional centres to reflect the geographic diversity of the NFP sector and our membership.
In addition to our NFP events, our Essential Director Update is an annual seminar, held nationally and is complimentary to our members. The seminar provides an informative update on legislative and regulatory changes affecting directors and is followed by an interactive Q&A discussion. A recording of seminar material is also available via webinar and is free of charge to our members.
We provide a suite of education programs for directors and boards of all levels of experience:
Policy and representation
One of our core member services is to develop policies on director issues, with a view to improving the Australian economy and society. Our expertise, representation and guidance makes us the premier voice of governance and directorship in Australia.
We have worked closely with Federal Government and with the Governments of the States and Territories with the ongoing reform of the NFP Sector. This has included our advocacy efforts to achieve more appropriate legislation for directors and officers of NFP organisations.
For more information, see our latest NFP policy submissions.
Publications and guides
We produce a range of publications and guides on good governance and directorship, including our monthly magazine, Company Director, and our fortnightly e-newsletters, The Boardroom Report and eXPRESSO NFP.
Our Good Governance Principles and Guidance for Not-for-Profit Organisations are designed to assist boards in determining what constitutes good governance practice for their oganisations and to achieve better outcomes through good governance.
Our Directors Social Impact Study is Australia's largest study examining governance of the NFP sector and the contribution made by its directors.
Now in its fourth year, the study examines the current application of governance principles across the NFP sector compared to the for-profit sector and provides further information on the challenges directors are facing.
Recognising the financial challenges experienced by many NFP organisations, we partner with the Australian Scholarships Foundation (ASF), Australia's only organisation solely focused on funding and facilitating scholarships for Australian NFP directors and staff.
Since the commencement of the partnership, 400 directors and managers in the NFP sector have been awarded scholarships to attend our education programs.
Governance Analysis Tool for NFPs
The Governance Analysis Tool (GAT) is a comprehensive guided assessment tool which provides a framework for the NFP board to assess their organisation's governance against accepted good governance practice. Concessional pricing for the GAT is available to the NFP sector.
Director Self-Assessment Tool
The Director Self-Assessment Tool is a free member-only tool that allows individuals to self-assess their current director capability against a framework of practice that underpins good directorship.
Approximately 57 percent of vacancies listed on Directorship Opportunities are for NFP roles. This service provides organisations an opportunity to list board vacancies for free and subscribers and opportunity to view hundreds of vacancies each year.
