The AICD is most concerned with the existing regime and this consultation draft bill only exacerbates our concerns. The brevity of the consultation period considering the importance of this issue is also of great concern. Dear Minister,

Occupational Health and Safety Legislation Amendment (workplace fatalities) Bill 2004 – consultation extension

The Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) which represents approximately 20,000 directors of Australian companies of all sizes seeks an extension to the consultation period on the Occupational Health and Safety Legislation Amendment (workplace fatalities) Bill 2004.

The AICD is most concerned with the existing regime and this consultation draft bill only exacerbates our concerns.

The brevity of the consultation period considering the importance of this issue is also of great concern. The AICD, like all in the community, is most anxious that this issue is addressed thoroughly and the desired outcome of safer workplaces achieved in the most effective and efficient manner.

Unintended consequences of hasty legislation are to be avoided at all costs. The processes to achieve the desired outcome are vital not only to employees but also to their employers and the economy as a whole.

The AICD has recently written to the NSW Premier expressing our interest in being consulted with regards to proposed legislation following the Jackson Report into the James Hardie matter and we believe these issues are closely linked and we again request the opportunity to be fully consulted on these issues.

Yours faithfully,

Ralph Evans
CEO
