Submission to Standards Australia on Standardisation in ITC Governance and Management

  • Date:13 May 2011
  • Type:Policy Submission

This submission is in response to Standards Australia's "Standardisation in ICT Governance and Management - Review of organisation participation and request for feedback".

We believe that properly developed and informed guidance for directors and managers on governance and management of IT is very useful in assuring effective, efficient and acceptable use of IT in all sectors of the economy.

While supporting the independent development of practical and pragmatic guidance by suitably qualified experts, we are concerned that conferring the title of "Standard" on such quidance is too often interpreted as establishing a set of conformance requirements, creating an expectation of conformance audits and associated overhards for business.

The result may become onerous for directors, may reduce the competitiveness of Australian industry, and may favour the IT industry at the expense of organisations that actually use IT.
