Company Directors Conference 2008 - 8 May Afternoon Update
Media & Communications: Media Release
Reforms in Aboriginal welfare systems were initiated thanks to the involvement of the business sector, Mr Noel Pearson, director of the Cape York Institute told the Australian Institute of Company Director’s Company Directors Conference on the Sunshine Coast today.
Mr Pearson said that moves in Cape York to empower communities by handing them responsibility for their lives occurred without the assistance of governments.
He said that restrictions introduced on welfare payments that depended on schooling, child welfare, housing maintenance and adherence to the law were started with the help of private industry which continues to help indigenous communities.
Mr Pearson issued a challenge to governments to reform the passive welfare system so such initial reform could be advanced further.
Conference delegates also heard UK-based futurist Dr Ian Pearson deliver an insightful presentation in the first afternoon session.
