Membership types
We have six categories of membership. Entry into each category is dependant upon your experience.

Criteria - demonstrate an interest in the affairs of the Institute, or aspire to become a Member of the Institute or to enrol in the Company Directors Course; or
- be a full-time student at an Australian Tertiary Education Institution.
The Mandatory DPD Requirement does not apply for the class of Affiliate. |

MAICD |
Criteria Applicants must meet at least one (1) of the following criteria: - have been a director or alternate director of a company or companies for two (2) or more years (concurrent directorships may not be added together in determining years of experience);
- be a senior executive with managerial responsibilities equivalent to those of an executive director or a member of local Boards of Advice of companies;
- be a partner or sole proprietor of a professional practice or unincorporated business, or a senior person with professional qualifications employed by a body corporate; or
- be an academic at the level of (or equivalent to) professor, or the head of a relevant faculty at a Tertiary Institution regulated by the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency.
To be eligible to renew their membership of the Institute into the class of Member an existing Member must fulfil the Mandatory DPD Requirement |

Criteria Applicants must have successfully completed the Company Directors Course (or an equivalent course determined by the Institute) and meet at least one (1) of the following criteria: - have been a director or alternate director of a company or companies for two (2) or more years (concurrent directorships may not be added together in determining years of experience);
- be a senior executive with managerial responsibilities equivalent to those of an executive director or a member of local Boards of Advice of companies;
- be a partner or sole proprietor of a professional practice or unincorporated business, or a senior person with professional qualifications employed by a body corporate; or
- be an academic at the level of (or equivalent to) professor, or the head of a relevant faculty at a Tertiary Institution regulated by the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency.
To be eligible to renew their membership of the Institute into the class of Graduate Member an existing Graduate Member must fulfil the Mandatory DPD Requirement. |

FAICD |
Criteria - Admission as a Fellow of the Institute is by application or invitation only. Applications for admission as a Fellow must be forwarded to the relevant Division Council for consideration
- Entry into the class of Fellow may be by the Standard Method, Special Exemption or Special Invitation. Specific criteria can be found in our By-Laws.
To be eligible to renew their membership of the Institute into the class of Fellow an existing Fellow must fulfil the Mandatory DPD Requirement. |
| Life Fellow |
FAICD(Life) |
Criteria - The Board of Directors may appoint as a Life Fellow of the Institute any person who has been eminent in the field of directorship and who has provided distinguished service to the Institute.
- The Mandatory DPD Requirement does not apply as a prerequisite for eligibility to admission into, or for membership renewal of, the class of Life Fellow.

Criteria - If you are living overseas, you can join as an international member.
- If you are a current member about to head overseas, you can maintain your membership by swapping to the international version.
- You do not have to be an Australian citizen but you must reside outside of Australia for the majority of each 12 month period.
