Boardroom Financial Acumen - Newcastle

Uncovering and assessing financial data can seem daunting; however, staying on top of your organisation’s financial information is a core responsibility for any director. Boardroom Financial Acumen is designed to help directors develop their understanding of financial assessment, strategy and risk oversight.

What will I learn?

Over the course of the day participants analyse financial statements for two hypothetical companies; drawn from either a telecommunications listed company, a not-for-profit or a fast-growth private company. Each company faces its own unique challenges, which are reflected in its finances. With the guidance of an experienced facilitator, learners develop the skills to identify and manage areas of concern in their own company’s finances.  

How will I benefit? 

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Leverage their financial leadership for effective governance and performance insight
  • Assess alternate business decisions for their financial impacts
  • Determine the solvency and sustainability of an organisation
  • Evaluate the types of key questions directors should be asking in relation to financial reports and financial data and their implications on present and future organisational performance
  • Evaluate if sufficient questions have been asked and appropriate action has been taken to address financial concerns

Boardroom Financial Acumen is also useful in preparation for the CDC assessment and the mastering level course Strengthening Financial Governance.

Who should attend?

This course is suitable for directors (from either a financial or non-financial background) of listed companies, public sector organisations, large private and small to mid-cap organisations in both the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors. It is highly recommended that participants have already completed the Company Directors Course.

Mode of study

Boardroom Financial Acumen is a non-traditional, experiential short course.  Room configuration is generally cabaret, to enable small group work and table discussion. Input is provided by a facilitator and PowerPoint slides, with two immersive scenarios to guide group learning. Group size is customarily limited to a maximum of 25 people. Participants are immersed into two different scenarios and learn with an experienced director peer group, with review and reflection guided by outstanding facilitators.

Duration

This is a one-day course (7 hours).
