AICD has been asked to deliver its International Company Directors Course in Singapore.

Singapore in our sights

Following the success of the International Company Directors Course in Shanghai in May 2007, the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) has approached the AICD to deliver the program in Singapore.

CIMA is a global membership organisation headquartered in the UK. In recent years, a growing percentage of CIMA members have started living and working in the Asia Pacific region and many of them hold director positions or report to boards.

Judy Vulker, CIMA’s director for South East Asia Pacific, notes: “We are keen to provide the best professional development opportunities to our members and a number have already completed the AICD Company Directors Course. In the UK, we work with the UK Institute of Directors, but there is nothing that matches these programs in Asia and we are keen to offer the same opportunity to our members wherever they work.”

According to the Memorandum of Understanding, CIMA will support the Singapore program by promoting the course to its members within the region and will offer support through its Singapore office. In return, CIMA members will be provided with the AICD member discount to attend the program.

“CIMA believes the course will be very popular with its members,” says Pamela Murray-Jones, AICD’s general manager, Director and Board Development. “The timing is particularly good. In June 2007, a report on the state of corporate governance in Singapore was released by the Monetary Authority of Singapore. One of the report’s recommendations was better training for directors. The author of the report, Professor Mak Yuen Teen from the National University of Singapore, suggested AICD’s Company Directors Course as a model and is very supportive of AICD delivering the course in Singapore.”

The course, which will be held from 11 to 16 of May, 2008, at the Sentosa (Beaufort) Resort, will also have the support of the Singapore’s Institute of Directors (SID). Indeed, Basil Chan, chairman of the Education Committee for SID, has provided formal endorsement of the course.

“It is our intention to deliver the course in various locations around the world,” says Murray-Jones. “We are planning to deliver the November 2008 program in Dubai, again with CIMA’s support and endorsement. We are also discussing what involvement in the program may be provided by Hawkamah, our Dubai equivalent. Wherever we deliver the course, it is our intention to offer local guest speakers who can provide information on the local context for directors, as well as a director-in-residence who has considerable international experience. There are as many as ten different countries represented on each of our international courses. For this reason alone, the experience to learn from director peers is unparalleled by any other program.”
